Wear White After Labor Day: ODDBall Event at UICA

by Bri Kilroy

The Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts (UICA) invites you to dress in white for the annual OddBall gala to complement 2015’s theme White Walls. Exhibition spaces will be transformed into a minimalist setting, stripping the background of all obtrusion in order for guests to admire the art on view.

This is your invitation to transform yourself into a canvas by dressing in a white ensemble of your creation and personality. Guests will arrive in everything from high fashion gowns, sleek white suits to simple thrift finds that harmonize with OddBall’s theme. See the different looks you can achieve on UICA’s Pinterest board, What to Wear: OddBall 2015 (pinterest.com/uica).

Cheeky Strut hair salon, known for its high-energy and cutting edge styles, will have hair and makeup stylists moving among the crowd. Prepare to become part of the art as you are pulled aside for a bold and glamorous makeover, complimentary to OddBall guests.

UICA’s ArtPrize Seven exhibit, SENSE, will be on display giving guests an exclusive first look at the six site-responsive projects on display throughout UICA’s floors. Guests can interact with the exhibits 10 days before they open to the public, engaging the five senses that are used to interact with the world around us.

The Kendall College of Art and Design and Calvin College collective ODD (Our Daily Dance Group) will be alongside the artwork, performing multiple times throughout the night. Musical artists will join the evening’s entertainment and serenade guests with distinct sounds that pair beautifully with the exhibits. Josh Weible, also known as Darkly, will fill the halls with enchanting melodies and a dark and soulful sound will enter the building with performances by Eric Tempelaere, known as ∆. Andrei.

The edible art will be provided by a strolling buffet catered by Applause Catering and The Gilmore Collection, but the unexpected touch will take place at the dessert table where Cakabakery and Le Bon Macaroon will offer desserts of various flavors. The mystery is that all the desserts are white and their flavor remains unknown until first bite. A cash bar will be available, serving local craft beer and wine.

Infuse your night with a little oddity and purchase tickets for UICA’s OddBall: White Wall Gala at www.UICA.org/oddball. OddBall will take place on September 12, 7-11 p.m. with proceeds benefitting UICA’s mission to build a creative community and provide genuine experiences with contemporary art.
