Treat the Skin You’re In With Michigan-made Bath and Body

REBEKA September 4, 2011 Comments Off

Imagine a soap that treats any skin type and makes your skin incredibly soft. And it’s 100% natural. Even better, it’s made right here in Michigan. These bath and body products are must-tries, and you’ll support local business in the process.

Here are five stories of Michigan-made products:

Sherri Hughes – Essential Verdue
Hughes, from Belding, Mich., has been creating products using essential oils in a myriad of ways for more than five years. Hughes’ friend, Nancy Buikema, inspired her by suggesting she make them with a more spiritual basis. Her best seller, All Chakras, opens up each of your seven chakras, which are based on an ancient Eastern wellness belief that balances your body and mind using the seven energy centers located along the spine, and govern all your organs.

Julian Tonning – Old Post Road Oil
Tonning started Old Post Road Oils Company in 2009 and currently works out of Holland, Mich. He was inspired to create his own shaving lubricant after becoming fed up one morning with the current shaving creams available. Tonning created an all-natural soap that is extremely mild and gentle, but a vigorous cleanser. Oils are a good lubricant for shaving because they nourish the skin and stay on until rinsed off. These products can also be used as cleaning soap or shampoo. His projects include Pear Tree Specialty Soap for Women.

Susan F. Griswold – Grand Rapids Soap Co.
Griswold started Grand Rapids Soap Co. in March. The thought of using natural, non-drying products on her skin, and a little help from a cousin who runs an organic farm, inspired Griswold to create her own bath and body products. Creating soaps is a relaxing process says Griswold, and she enjoys every aspect from putting ingredients together to seeing the finished product. Her best sellers, lavender bath salts and red clover tea soap, are perfect for a relaxing bath.

Cindy Allen – IKIGAI LLC
IKIGAI LLC was founded just this year. As a fiber artist, Allen heard about felted soaps and became proficient at making them. The felted layer on the soap acts as a washcloth or loofa when in use and helps the soap to last longer. Allen became interested in fibers at a young age when her mother gave her a ball of yarn, a pair of needles and a book of stitch patterns. She recently decided to follow her passion and named her company IKIGAI, meaning motivation or purpose in life
