The Canvas Expands for Artprize Nine

The Ninth Annual Artprize competition, set to take place from September 20-October 8, will debut 41 new venues, bringing the total to 182. All venues, with the exception of three—Gerald R. Ford International Airport, Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park, and Rumsey Street —fall within the 3-square mile Artprize district. The number of participating venues is subject to change, as all venues must work independently to connect with at least one artist during the Connections period. The final number will be announced on June 26 following the closing of the Connections period.

Rumsey Street will be taken over by neighborhood residents, former members of the  St. Joseph the Worker congregation and local artists, following the two-year residency by SiTE:LAB in collaboration with Habit for Humanity of Kent County. SiTE:LAB has announced that it will not be participating in this year’s competition but will instead host smaller exhibitions and events as they ramp up for their ambitious exhibition in 2018, which will be held in the 100,000-square foot space at 415 Franklin—a former high school and the future home of Madison Square Church.

Artist registration for ArtPrize Nine will take place from April 17-June 8, and artists and venues will connect online at artprize.org from April 24-June 22.
