Shawn Colvin won her first Grammy for Best Contemporary Folk Album with her debut Steady On in 1989. Her humor- and sensuality- infused folk sound earned her two more Grammy awards and seven nominations. Since her first release, Colvin has released a string of albums, and due to her open, nearly tangible performances and striking wit, she has established the reputation as a great live performer.
She is known for her imagination, delicate guitar work, and unique melodies as displayed in familiar song Sunny Came Home, which earned her two 1998 Grammy awards, Song and Record of the year. Most recently, Colvin released her second cover album, Uncovered, in 2015. This album, unlike her first cover album, Cover Girl, pays tribute to her personal and performing inspirations, and includes song covers from talented artists including Bruce Springsteen, Paul Simon, Tom Waits, Stevie Wonder, Robbie Robertson, Graham Nash and more.
“The title ‘Uncovered’ has a few meanings,” Colvin explains on her website, www.shawncolvin.com. “It means uncovering as in an excavation, and uncovered in the sense of vulnerability. This album was made very spontaneously—we didn’t over-think or overdub it. One of my friends said to me, ‘You sound so exposed on this record!’ and I think that’s the thematic key, vulnerability.”
Colvin is commencing St. Cecilia Music Center’s (SCMC) 2016 Acoustic Café Series, a performance-based partnership between SCMC and the syndicated radio show Acoustic Café and its host Rob Reinhart. The Acoustic Café Series focalizes on touring singer/songwriter folk/Americana musicians, offering both a live concert at SCMS and a live taping with the artists.
Cathy Holbrook, Executive Director of St. Cecilia Music Center commented, “With the intimacy of Royce Auditorium, Shawn’s sensitive performance style, and the heartfelt music from her new album it will be a night that will be very special and emotion filled.”
