Grand Rapids Sister Cities International announced the winner of the second annual essay contest in celebration of International Women’s Day (March 8). The contest is one of the many programs of Grand Rapids Sister Cities which works to bring the world closer to home in GR through cultural exchanges and activities.
The contest was open to all students in grades 9-12 in the city of Grand Rapids. Submitted essays reflect on “A Special Woman Who Influenced Me” whom the student may or may not have met. The woman must be from one of the countries represented by Grand Rapids’ sister cities—Ghana, Italy, Japan, Mexico or Poland. This year’s essay winner is Berani Martinez Maldonado, and her extraordinary woman is her mother, Carmen Maldonado.
The essay was coordinated by Ruth Anne Lomas. Contest judges included Charmayne Mulligan, Ph.D. of Davenport University, Victoria Upton of Women’s Lifestyle Magazine and Debra Rienstra, Ph.D. of Calvin College.
The announcement was held during a full house at the Grand Rapids City Commission meeting on March 7th, at LINC UP Gallery.
