The beloved family musical is returning to the Grand Rapids Civic Theatre after 14 years! Fiddler on the Roof features classic songs such as “Tradition”, “Sunrise, Sunset”, “If I Were A Rich Man” and “Matchmaker”.
The Grand Rapids Civic Theatre is thrilled to bring this musical theatre “Tradition” back to West Michigan. “Every generation feels they are the first to challenge beliefs and traditions,” notes director Bruce Tinker. “They attempt to prepare their children for the future with a unique recipe of the traditions and beliefs that have been passed to them and that they have learned through their lives only to discover that their children (just as they did) will ultimately define their own destinies.”
Fiddler on the Roof follows the story of Tevye, a dairyman, who is raising his daughters in the rich Jewish tradition in the village of Anatevka, Russia. When his oldest daughters fall in love, questions about their tradition are raised as tension rises with the Russian government. “This is a timeless story of a man with so much love and so much faith that he merrily embraces the veritable trials of Job that are sent his way,” explains Tinker. ”With a wry acceptance, Tevye embodies all that we wish we could be as Fathers, but suffers much we thankfully know we are likely never to know.”
The opening of Fiddler on the Roof also signifies the exciting announcement revealing the 2013/14 season at The Grand Rapids Civic Theatre. “I’m so excited about GRCT’s upcoming season I can hardly contain myself! In my excitement, I’ve struggled to keep the lid on the secret of our line-up!” says current Civic Theatre Board president Penny Evert. “One of the most popular Broadway musicals of our generation is coming to GRCT! There’s your one hint until we make our formal announcement at the opening of Fiddler!” The Grand Rapids Civic Theatre will be unveiling their much anticipated 88 season on March 1.
Fiddler on the Roof opens on March 1 and runs through March 24. The story is the winner of 9 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, along with 3 Academy Awards for the film version. The Grand Rapids Civic Theatre previously won 2 Grand Awards with their 1999 Production.
