On, Thursday, October 26 from 5:00 to 8:00 pm, join Design Quest in celebrating 45 years of bringing innovative, high quality modern furniture to Grand Rapids. The premier housewares store is welcoming the public to enjoy a retrospective of furniture from various periods, dating back to the opening of the first showroom in 1972 in a modest 1,200 square foot space located in Gaslight Village. The retrospective has been put together with the help of longtime customers lending iconic pieces to the exhibition.
Founders Jorgen and Meg Sorensen shared a love of modern design, and where seeking a change from their lives in Arizona. At the time, Meg’s brother was the city manager of Grand Rapids, and invited the couple to visit the burgeoning city, the rest is history.
“From the very beginning, we have been fascinated by design that is so remarkable in its technical excellence, simplicity, and beauty that it is an art” Jorgen said. “This is the design that nourishes us and which we wish to share.”
The Sorensen’s son Thor grew up tending to the store and delivering furniture on weekends. He joined the family business full time after graduating from the University of Michigan.
“Over the years we have had the privilege to help furnish so many wonderful peoples homes.” Thor expressed. “It is really exciting to be able to borrow furniture for our exhibit, some we have not sold for decades and possibly something I delivered.”
