Flint, MI, March 1 – BISSELL Pet Foundation™, supported in part by BISSELL Homecare, Inc., has awarded $10,000 to All About Animals Rescue (Warren, MI) to help animals affected by the Flint water crisis. Funds will be used to spay/neuter 143 pets exposed to lead toxicity.
The Flint water crisis has received national attention for the high levels of lead in the drinking water and the damaging effects on those who have consumed it. Pets are among the victims. Realizing the damaging effects of lead exposure on pets, Genesee County Animal Control requested All About Animals provide spay/neuter operations to prevent a future influx of lead-exposed puppies and kittens. Lead exposure in animals poses countless deleterious effects including anemia, gastrointestinal distress, kidney failure, teeth and gum erosion, and dulling of cognitive function which are passed on to a litter by the mother. The BISSELL Pet Foundation grant will allow All About Animals to provide 143 spay/neuter surgeries at no cost to the pet owners.
“Thanks to BISSELL Pet Foundation, there are many at-risk pets who won’t be adding to the homeless (pet) population in Flint,” asserted Amber Sitko, President and Founder of All About Animals.
“The Flint water crisis is tragic for pets too,” explains Cathy Bissell, Founder of BISSELL Pet Foundation. “We feel a sense of obligation to help our distressed neighbors in Flint and are honored to be of assistance by preventing unplanned litters of dogs and cats with lead toxicity.”
BISSELL Pet Foundation addresses the growing problem of displaced, unwanted and homeless pets by providing assistance to shelter and rescue programs, and by creating awareness about pet overpopulation, in the hopes of finding every pet a loving home. In times of crisis, the foundation supports other projects advancing animal welfare. Since its inception, the foundation has given more than $3 million in support to organizations like All About Animals Rescue.
