The Cheese Lady

Since opening a storefront in Grand Rapids five years ago, The Cheese Lady, located at 315 Fuller Ave NE, has been pleasing palates throughout West Michigan with its decadent cheese varieties. With more than 150 different cheeses from all over the world–from tangy blues, creamy goat’s, sharp sheep’s and buttery cow’s–the shop prides itself on having something for everyone.

Browse the shelves and display tables, and you’ll stumble across luxurious wooden cutting boards, unique cheese-cutting knives and a one-of-a-kind selection of handcrafted pottery by Comstock Park artist, Rita Shields.

A former ceramic teacher at the Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts, Shields is master in her creative field; her pieces each feature an element of nature or an animal. She creates her work organically, purposely leaving bumps or uneven edges that add character to the piece, resulting in rustic-looking, functional decor.

From covered butter dishes to pitchers and mugs to a full set of large and small plates, Shields fulfills all custom design orders for those who want to purchase her designs in a different color or theme.
